Bathing seat fit

A shower chair rests within the bathing space. A transfer bench extends across a tub edge, with legs inside and outside the tub. Measure the floor and door clearances, then check the exact model instructions. A published load rating alone cannot tell you whether either product suits a person.

Choose the task before the product

Start with the route into and out of the bathing space. Does the plan involve stepping over a tub side, sitting outside the tub and moving across a bench, or entering a shower? Write that task down before comparing seat sizes. A chair and a transfer bench take up different spaces and support different routines.

These measurements help a household prepare questions for an occupational therapist, equipment supplier or installer. They do not assess balance, strength or transfer ability. If those needs are uncertain, ask a qualified professional to observe the task before buying equipment.

Measure the space the whole product needs

Record the clear floor width and depth, the narrowest point between fixtures, the tub rim height and width, and the opening left by a shower door. Include the door's sweep. A stated seat width is not the outside width across the legs. The legs need their own resting positions, clear of a drain edge or a curved tub wall.

For a bench, measure the floor both inside and outside the tub. Ask the supplier how the selected model handles that difference and whether the tub shape allows every foot to rest as its manual requires. Check which side the backrest and arm fit before ordering. Do not assume a bench will fit behind a sliding door or across a curved tub side.

Two manufacturer-documented examples

The following records show why the exact model matters. They are examples for comparing the measurements you need, rather than a ranking of suitable products. The chair's published seat dimensions do not supply its complete footprint. The bench's wider seat and separate leg positions create a different clearance question.

These are manufacturer-documented examples. We have not tested these products or assessed anyone's ability to use them.

Drive Medical RTL12505

Shower chair

Published seat dimensions
21.75 × 16.5 inches

Drive Medical 12011KD-1

Transfer bench

Published seat dimensions
26 inches wide × 18.5 to 19.5 inches deep
Published height adjustment
17.5 to 22.5 inches
Manufacturer load limit
400 lb
  • This record is for one bench, not the 12011KD-2 case pack.
  • The manual requires all four leg tips to contact the floor and places the suction-cup legs inside the tub. Follow the complete manual and confirm clearance before purchase.

The Drive Medical RTL12505 instruction sheet says to read the instructions before use and to use the arms for assistance only. Its removable arms do not establish that an unsupported transfer is suitable.

The 12011KD-1 manufacturer manual describes reversible back support and the assembly of the inside suction-cup legs. Follow the full instructions supplied with the exact unit. Stop if parts are missing, damaged or do not lock as described.

Check the order and the assembled product

Match the model number, included back and arms, quantity and return conditions. The 12011KD-2 code describes a case pack; it is not the one-unit record shown here. A retailer's similar photograph does not resolve a model or pack difference.

Before use, compare the assembled product with the manual and the measurements you recorded. Ask the supplier about worn feet, loose fittings, replacement parts and cleaning. Do not stand on a bathing seat. A product that can bear a published load can still be the wrong shape or arrangement for a particular bathroom and person.

Place the seat in the wider bathroom plan

Use the toilet support fit guide for a separate toilet task. The tub-to-shower conversion guide helps separate removable equipment from plumbing and construction. Record the decision in the room-by-room checklist, and compare any installed bathing project with the walk-in tub cost guide.
